The City of Bulawayo has reinforced its commitment to cleanliness by commissioning four refuse compactors worth US$602,400 on Wednesday. This initiative is part of efforts to restore Bulawayo’s reputation as a clean and well-managed city.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mayor Senator David Coltart described the event as a milestone in enhancing service delivery and maintaining a clean environment.

“Rental payments are not being wasted on fancy vehicles. While this is a small step, it is a significant one,” said Mayor Coltart.

He acknowledged that while some may see the addition of four compactors as minor, it is an important part of the city’s rebuilding and service improvement strategy.

The commissioning comes at a crucial time, as Bulawayo prepares to host the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair later this month, a prestigious event that showcases the city’s pride and progress.

Bulawayo currently operates 16 refuse compactor trucks, but 44% have exceeded their economic lifespan, making them inefficient and costly to maintain. To achieve an efficient and sustainable refuse collection system, the city requires 17 additional compactor trucks.

The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Councillor Edwin Ndlovu, other councillors, Town Clerk Mr. Christopher Dube, senior management, and staff members.
