In a landmark move towards decolonization, Bulawayo is replacing its colonial-era mayoral regalia with a locally inspired design that honors the city’s rich cultural heritage. The traditional red robe, a relic of colonial rule, will soon be replaced with a modern gown reflecting indigenous traditions and identity.
Mayor David Coltart will be the last to wear the colonial-era regalia and the first to embrace the new design, marking a historic transition. Local designers, including Ganu Designs and The Tribe Called Zimbabwe, are being considered to craft the new look, ensuring it authentically represents Bulawayo’s diverse heritage.
This change signals Bulawayo’s commitment to shedding colonial remnants and celebrating its identity, with excitement already building across social media.
