In a much-welcomed development for the Matabeleland region, the Maleme River in the Matopos is reported to be running strongly, with the nearby dam rapidly filling to capacity. According to Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart, the dam is expected to spill soon, marking a significant boost for the region’s water supply.
Mayor Coltart shared the update earlier today, accompanied by a photograph taken just an hour before, showcasing the river’s powerful flow. “Thank you, Lord God, for answering our prayers,” he said in a statement. “We still have a considerable way to go before our other dams fill, but this rain is simply a Godsend.”
The region’s eastern Matopos also received heavy rainfall last night, recording an impressive 100mm in the catchment area of Bulawayo’s Mtshabezi Dam. Mayor Coltart expressed optimism about this development, anticipating that the dam would soon take in substantial quantities of water.
The recent rains have brought much-needed relief to the Bulawayo area, which has faced persistent water shortages due to prolonged drought conditions. Residents and officials alike are celebrating this promising turn of events, though they acknowledge that the water supply challenge is far from over.
Local meteorological reports indicate that the rains are expected to continue, providing further hope for the replenishment of other critical dams supplying the City of Bulawayo.
The update has sparked a wave of gratitude and optimism among residents, with many praising the Mayor for his transparency and continued efforts to address the city’s water crisis.
As the rains continue, the region remains cautiously hopeful that this marks the beginning of a solution to its ongoing water challenges.
