Last weekend, the “Matobo Goes Fashion… and Beyond” launch exhibition took centre stage, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Zimbabwe in a spectacular fusion of art and fashion. The exhibition, held in partnership with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, Matobo Collection, Fashion Council of Zimbabwe, and the talented women artists of Matobo, was a true masterpiece.
The event was graced by the presence of Hon Ambassador of Germany to Zimbabwe, The Mayor of Bulawayo Senator David Coltart, and the Minister of State for Bulawayo Province and Devolution, Judith Ncube, who all showed their support for the local fashion and art community.
The exhibition showcased the creativity and ingenuity of local fashion designers, who transformed traditional Matobo designs into stunning contemporary fashion pieces. The runway was ablaze with colour and energy, featuring designs from Kelly Ndlovu, Margaret Mathambo, Yvonne Muzembe, Noliwe Mhlophe, Samkele Ncube, Tinashe Kahlela, Charity Moyo, Sithabile Tazibona, Sam Leeroy, and Annie Maliki.
The night was filled with music and dance, courtesy of Matojeni, Iyasa (Inkululeko Yabatsha School of Arts), and Asante-Mo, who set the tone for a joyous celebration. Our MC, Um’Africakazi, did an excellent job guiding us through the packed event.
This exhibition is a significant milestone for Zimbabwe’s fashion sector, as it not only celebrates the country’s rich cultural heritage but also provides a platform for local designers to showcase their talents. It’s a testament to the growing interest in African fashion and the potential for Zimbabwean designers to make a mark on the global fashion scene.
The success of this exhibition is also a reflection of the growing collaboration between local fashion stakeholders, including designers, models, and industry experts. It’s a positive step towards building a thriving fashion industry in Zimbabwe, one that celebrates the country’s unique cultural identity while also embracing modernity and innovation.
The project coordinators, Yolanda Ngwenya and Nka Malunga, for their tireless efforts in bringing this incredible event to life on the 17th of January.
