Excitement is building as preparations for the main event of the 21st February commemorations at Barbourfields Stadium gain momentum. Scheduled for February 21, 2025, the event is expected to draw large crowds from surrounding suburbs, including Mzilikazi, Makokoba, Thorngrove, and Matshobane.

Under the theme “Empower Youth, Secure the Future,” the commemorations will provide a platform for young people to interact with President Mnangagwa, showcase their talents, and highlight their role in national development. The event will also address critical issues such as drug abuse and youth empowerment initiatives.

Ahead of the main celebrations, several pre-event activities, including sports, cultural exhibitions, and outreach programs, have been lined up. A citywide clean-up campaign and anti-drug abuse awareness initiatives will also take place, emphasizing the event’s commitment to shaping a brighter future for Zimbabwean youth.

Speaking to My Kasi Magazine, young people shared their expectations and concerns regarding the event.

I hope this event will address the challenges we face as young people, particularly the lack of employment opportunities,” said Nobuhle Dube, a Bulawayo resident. “We need jobs and a better future, not just empty promises.”

Mthandazo Moyo echoed similar sentiments, expressing concern over corruption. “Corruption is a major problem in our country, and it affects young people the most. I hope the President will use this platform to address these issues and provide real solutions.”

Many also hope the event will tackle the city’s growing drug abuse crisis.

“Drug abuse is destroying our community, and it’s heartbreaking to see our friends and peers getting hooked on substances,” said Sithandazile Ncube. “I hope the event will create meaningful dialogue on how to combat this issue.”

With foreign dignitaries and youth representatives from various African nations expected to attend, the commemorations promise to be a landmark event for Bulawayo. Many hope it will spark tangible change and opportunities for the city’s youth.
